Description

With its roots in the industrial revolution and the sense of social disintegration and private anguish that grew out of it, American noir has developed as a specific branch of crime fiction emphasizing violence, alienation and the pervasive nature of evil, as against the reassuring narratives of the Conan Doyle-Agatha Christie tradition.

This course will look at the evolution of noir through four classic works, seeking to contextualize them in American social history as well as in the overall development of American crime fiction.

In the first part of the course, dedicated to Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler, we will look at the rise of noir fiction in the aftermath of WWI. In the second part, which focuses on Patricia Highsmith and Chester Himes, we will reflect on the genre as a venue for the formulation of minority points of view and cultural rebellions in the post-WWII era.

Finally, we will consider the impact of noir fiction on the world of cinema, from the Hollywood noir of the post-war era (Hawks, Hitchcock) to Japanese Samurai movies (Kurozawa) and 1970s Blaxploitation films.
