Description

This course aims to show how American culture has built up an iconography of its own, using emerging technologies to represent its territory and population, but also to develop unique artistic endeavours.

Regarding photography, this will lead us to explore the frequent crisscrossing and interdependency between two presumably irreconcilable trends: the documentary approach (Mathew Brady,  Ansel Adams, Walker Evans, Berenice Abbott, Nan Goldin) and the formal quest (Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Weston, Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, Robert Mapplethorpe, Cindy Sherman).

We will then focus on the aesthetic links developed between cinema and photography– e.g. between Westerns and Edward S. Curtis, Depression films and Dorothea Lange, film noir and Weegee, but also the parallel practice of both arts by Morris Engel and Ruth Orkin, or the echoes to be found today between David Lynch and Gregory Crewdson – in a creative tension between pictoriality and narration, testimony and fiction.
