Description

This course offers an introduction to British culture and present-day British society. It presents a comprehensive survey of the contemporary social, political and cultural reality of the United Kingdom and examines central structural features of British society such as geography and demography, UK institutions and politics and the relationship between the four “historic nations” of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

 

The main topics will be :

The UK : one country, four nations

The concept of Britishness : clichés and stereotypes

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland: a “celtic fringe”?

The North-South Divide: living in a de-industrialised society

UK institutions: a constitutional monarchy

UK Politics

The UK in the world :  European Union/Brexit - Special relationship with the USA-Commonwealth

The British economy: assets and weaknesses

The British population

Immigration and multiculturalism

Redefining the concept of Britishness

Objectifs

This course aims at developing students’ ability to organise their own responses to British society and encourages critical discussion based on a careful reading and analysis of primary and secondary sources, mainly press articles.

Évaluation

Session 1 - Contrôle continu : un devoir écrit à mi-parcours (1h30) 50% de la note et un devoir écrit final (1h30) 50 % de la note. Les devoirs comprendront des questions de cours et/ou des questions de synthèse, des questions de compréhension d'un document écrit et/ou la rédaction d'une introduction à un commentaire de civilisation portant sur le document. Un bonus de participation et de valorisation du travail personnel pourra être accordé.

Contrôle dérogatoire : 1 devoir écrit de 1h30 : comprenant des questions de cours et/ou des questions de compréhension d’un document écrit, l’introduction d’un commentaire portant sur ce document.

Session 2 : 1 devoir écrit de 1h30 : comprenant des questions de cours et/ou des questions de compréhension d’un document écrit, l’introduction d’un commentaire portant sur ce document.
