• « 19e-20e » / British and American Literatures, 19th and 20th centuries »

Ce cours abordera les littératures britannique et américaine du 19ème et du début du 20ème siècles à travers deux romans iconiques. Du côté britannique, il étudiera le mouvement du Modernisme, sa rupture avec le Réalisme ainsi que son articulation dans un contexte historique de révolutions industrielle et politique et d'empire colonial et ses questionnements sur un monde chaotique. Du côté américain, il se concentrera sur un roman urbain naturaliste se déroulant dans une ville labyrinthique et tentaculaire, cette "jungle urbaine" caractéristique de la croissance industrielle américaine qui a façonné une humanité laborieuse, essentiellement issue de l'émigration.

This course will explore   19th century and early twentieth century British and American literatures   by focusing on two iconic novels . On the   British side , it will focus   on the Modernist   movement and   its breaking away from Realism as well as its   connection with a historical context dominated by industrial and political revolutions and the expansion of colonial empires. It will then discuss how it questioned an increasingly chaotic world. On the   American side , it will examine a Naturalist urban novel taking place in a maze-like and sprawling megalopolis whose « urban jungle » is characteristic of the wild and often unregulated growth of the American industry at the turn of the twentieth century. It will mostly delve into the way in which it shaped the working masses and their   struggles   as most of them had just emigrated to the United-States.

En écho aux nombreuses études sur le genre appliquées à la littérature, ce cours veut revisiter la question de la construction des genres et de leurs subversions dans la littérature anglo-saxonne. Ainsi on explorera comment se représentent les genres à la fois dans la trame d’une fiction et à travers des personnages, comment ces représentations du masculin et du féminin peuvent venir corroborer ou remettre en cause le contrôle social notamment à travers leur peinture subversive ou le travestissement.

In the wake of the numerous forms of gender studies applied to literature, this course aims at revisiting the construction and deconstruction of gender in British and American literature. We will study how gender is represented, be it in plot or characterization , as well as how gendered representations abide by, or question, social control, especially through subversion in its various forms, among them cross-dressing.

Consolider ses connaissances de mouvements littéraires majeurs tels que le réalisme et le modernisme, grâce à une étude précise des textes et de leurs contextes historiques, sociaux, culturels.

• « Masculin / F éminin » / Masculinity / Femininity 

Initiation des étudiants de deuxième année aux problématiques des théories sur le genre appliquées au genre dramatique et romanesque. Travail d’analyse d’un texte littéraire sous un angle à la fois esthétique, historique et philosophique.
