The course reflects upon one of the most important recent developments of European democracies: the success and performance of populist political parties. At the end of the course students should be able to explain basic approaches in the study of populism (as an ideology, a discourse, a communication style) to define the main features of populism and to describe the development and characteristics of main populist parties in Europe. Specific attention is paid to the relationship between populism and democracy and the role of Europe (Euroscepticism) in the ideology of populist political parties. The course provides explanations of the electoral success of populist parties and characteristics of their voters, including the importance of attitudes towards the European Union. Also, various measurements of populism and populism-related datasets are introduced.
