This course will explore the history of various European empires, starting with a study of the multi-faceted notion of ‘empire’, as will be first illustrated by the complex reality and history of the Holy Roman Empire (962-1806). It will then look at how Portugal, Spain, Britain and Italy took control of and ruled overseas territories, describe how European domination was resisted and ended, and explain the traces left by colonization and imperialism in the contemporary world. Students will be presented with historical texts and images, and will have to establish logical links between the various cases so as to try and make sense of the different European imperial experiencesbeyond their apparent heterogeneity.
