Littérature anglophone 1: Art et justice

How might literature attempt to do justice? This class will examine three North American documentary poetic works which appropriate trial documents in order to consider different responses to this question. Charles Reznikoff’s Testimony : The United States, 1885-1915 : Recitative (1965-1974), often considered the first major work reprising court documents as poetry, will be examined for the portrait it sketches out of the United States at the turn of the 20th century; Tobagan-Canadian nourbeSe philip’s Zong! (2006) challenges the representation of a mass crime commited by slavetraders and explores possibilities for its memorialisation through the appropriation of an historic court decision; Reginald Dwayne Bett’s redaction poems in Felon (2019) question the bail bond system and the role of the legal system in reproducing poverty in the United States.

Exploring these works will allow us to discuss the representations of the violence the legal system both responds to and administers, as well as literature’s potential to think critically about the law.
