History of English

This course offers an introduction to the evolution of English over the last 1500 years. After seeing how language changes through time, students will study Old English and see how radically different it was from contemporary English in terms of pronunciation, spelling, lexicon, and grammar. They will then chronologically follow the subsequent evolution of English in those different linguistic aspects, and study the influence of various historical events on some of these changes. Retracing this evolution and accounting for the phenomena that took place will allow students to bridge the gap between the way English was spoken more than a thousand years ago and how it is today. With this course, they will understand why English has a number of distinctive features, such as its very peculiar spelling or the presence in its vocabulary of a high number of French-looking words.

Students who select this course are required to master the basic concepts covered over the last two years in grammar (word classes, syntactic functions, tenses and aspects, sentence types) and phonology (phonemes and allophones, graphemes, International Phonetic Alphabet, articulatory phonetics).

By the end of the semester, students will be able to discuss specific assertions about the main evolutions of English throughout its history, to retrace the evolution of individual English words and constructions, and to understand and rephrase short passages from texts written in non-contemporary English.
