Culture visuelle 1 - The American Image  

This course aims to study how, as a young nation, the US has felt the need to build up an iconography of its own, representing its territory and its evolving population, but also to create a national mythology through visual icons – an imagery developed both by the fine arts and, equally, by the mass circulation of cultural and even commercial artifacts. Decisively, American culture has embraced the emerging technologies and “democratic” media of photography then cinema, spawning unique and influential artistic endeavours.

Regarding photography, this will lead us to explore the frequent crisscrossing and interdependency between two presumably irreconcilable trends: the documentary approach (Mathew Brady,  Jacob A. Riis, Lewis Hine, Walker Evans, Nan Goldin…) and the formal quest (Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Weston, Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, Cindy Sherman…).

We will also focus on the aesthetic links developed between cinema and photography– e.g. between Westerns and Edward S. Curtis, Depression films and Dorothea Lange, film noir and Weegee, but also the parallel practice of both arts by Paul Strand, by Morris Engel & Ruth Orkin, or the echoes to be found today between David Lynch and Gregory Crewdson – in a creative tension between pictoriality and narration, testimony and fiction.

Active participation in class will be taken into account for the final grade.
