Littérature anglophone 2 : American Crime Fiction

This course aims to provide students with an overview of the early stages and development of American Crime Fiction.

With its roots in the industrial revolution, the chaotic development of American cities and the sense of social disintegration and private anguish that grew out of them, American crime fiction has developed as a specific literary tradition (often called “hardboiled” or “noir”) emphasizing violence, alienation and the pervasive nature of evil, as against the reassuring narratives of the British tradition of detective fiction represented by Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie. This course will look at some key texts of American crime fiction, seeking to connect its development with American social history and, more specifically, with the impact of the industrial revolution, World War I and the Great Depression.

As an introduction, we will look at the origins of American crime fiction in “The Murders of the Rue Morgue,” a story by Edgar Allan Poe, the founder of the genre. Then, we will look at the early evolution of American crime fiction as represented, in the years 1900-1930, by two short stories : Jack London’s “Just Meat” and Ernest Hemingway’s “The Killers”. An extract from John Dos Passos’s novel 1919 will help us to link the history of American crime fiction in the 1920s with the experience of World War I. Finally, we will conclude our study by looking at two major writers : Dashiell Hammett and James M. Cain, who respectively register the development of gang violence in the age of Prohibition and the social turn of the American crime story during the Great Depression.

Évaluation session 1 :

- Formule standard : Deux examens écrits comptant chacun pour 50% de la note finale.

- Formule dérogatoire : une épreuve écrite en 2 heures comptant pour 100% de la note finale.

Évaluation session 2 : une épreuve écrite en 2h comptant pour 100% de la note finale.
