Civilisation Etats-Unis 2

The course will expose the various aspects of the US’ relation with the rest of the world over the last century: a long-standing tradition of isolationism and a form of cultural and geographical self-sufficiency; as old a sense of manifest destiny and exceptional exemplarity, in good or bad faith; the key US interventions abroad which have changed the fate of the 20th century (the two world wars); a self-righteous form of ideological influence derived in good part from the Cold War; the famous or less known cases of US imperialism in the service of selfish economic or geopolitical interests; entertainment and new media as the carriers of a continued US influence worldwide nowadays; and the many forms of Antiamericanism raised here and there by US hegemony and the enduring pursuit of the country’s interests. Students’ presentations will deal with detailed examples of the major themes covered during the first weeks. Texts and/or links and/or other types of documents will be attached on CoursEnLigne or handed out in class.
