Littérature anglophone 3 : Le vers, la voix, l’identité : un atelier. Verse, voice and identity : A workshop.

Description : Interpréter l’identité d’une voix dans la poésie dans la littérature américaine et britannique (21^e-17^e siècle).

Interpreting identities through poetry in American and British Literature (21st century-17th century).

How does the identity of a character or a voice constructed through words manifest itself in literature, and particularly in poetry? How do these ways of being—shaped by language, culture, and form—vary over time?

In this course, we will explore these questions in a practical way, not only by analyzing English and American poetic texts but also by reciting them aloud in order to fully grasp the relationship between the written voice(s) and its interpretation through speech, as seen from each student’s personal viewpoint. Creative writing exercises will complement this practical approach to verse, its constraints, and its resources.

We will work with excerpts and a complete work, starting in the 21st century and gradually moving back to the 17th century, so as to provide the students with a historical perspective of the issues at stake in self-representation and a first approach to 17th century cultural background.

The complete work we will examine is John Milton’s Paradise Lost (1674). This landmark work in Anglo-Saxon literature and visual arts will allow us to explore how this epic poem brings us into contact with both mythical and biblical characters through the expressive power of verse and its visual force.

Throughout the semester, the students will work on the methodology of text commentaries (commentaire composé) and will be introduced to the methodology of the essay.

Évaluation Session 2 : 1 écrit de 2 heures portant sur l’œuvre complète.
