Titre : Creative Britain, British art and culture after the neoliberal turn, 1979-today

In this course, we will see how Britain has tried to nurture cultural democracy in its own specific way. In order to understand this specificity, we will look into the lingering tensions between the objectives of excellence and of accessibility which have persisted in a country with a distinctive cultural history. The watershed of the 1980s will be our focus to explore these institutional and aesthetic aspects of British artistic life, when the country was branded as “creative Britain” and the creative industries became a major economic and political stake. We will look into the new hybridized forms of funding to have emerged since 1979 and the way they have impacted the national artistic ecosystem and its standing on the world stage. We will also look into the more specifically aesthetic resonances these changes might have had on the art itself by studying the work of Tracey Emin, Antony Gormley, Anish Kapoor, Grayson Perry, Jeremy Deller, Rachel Whiteread or Damien Hirst (to name but a few).
