Cultures anglophones : Lire la presse (EAD)

This course aims at increasing the students’ knowledge of the press across the English-speaking world through the study of recent press articles, using both current events and history as a guide. The course addresses many different topics involving the press and the media in general, thus helping the students to get to know the main newspapers and the media ecosystem (in the US and the UK particularly), to understand how a newspaper is structured and to discover the different types of articles published in the press. Students will also develop their command of the elliptic grammar of newspaper headlines and their grasp of what an editorial line is. Through the different topics tackled during the term (see below), students will develop a more precise understanding of the role the press plays in a democracy.

–        Fake news & fact-checking

–        The Fourth Estate & politics

–        Can and should the press be objective and impartial?

–        Journalism and global issues (the press & global warming, war correspondents, etc.)

–        Journalism in popular culture

–        Diversity in newsrooms

–        Yellow journalism

As far as methodology is concerned, this class will enable the participants to improve their writing and communication skills. Students will learn how to summarize press articles efficiently.

▪         Approfondissement de la connaissance de l’aire anglophone
