Linguistique : Language and the Mind: An Introduction to Cognitive Linguistics L3S6

This course is designed as an introduction to cognitive linguistics and more specifically to Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT). Cognitive linguistics is a branch of linguistics which emerged in the 1970s and considers language as part of general cognition: it particularly focuses on the relation between language and thought.

The course will first define cognitive linguistics and explain its development against generative and structuralist models. It will deal with notions such as categorisation and  embodiment, and highlight the importance of context.

Students will discover the main theoretical approaches to cognitive linguistics, such as image schemas, framing, blending, Conceptual Metaphor Theory and their limits. This course will particularly focus on metaphors, and students will be able to observe their different functions in discourse (cognitive, persuasive, dysphemistic, euphemistic, didactic, catachretic, aesthetic) and their potential dangers.

Students will be trained to produce written and oral analyses in the theoretical framework of cognitive linguistics, using the approaches studied over the semester, particularly on the basis of authentic written and audiovisual corpora.

Les objectifs principaux de ce cours sont :

-       de sensibiliser les étudiant.e.s à l’importance de l’usage en linguistique

-       d’aider les étudiant.e.s à comprendre les principes fondamentaux d’un cadre théorique donné (linguistique cognitive) et savoir les utiliser pour analyser des extraits de corpus authentiques

-       de comprendre que le langage influence notre manière de penser et reflète notre manière de percevoir la réalité

-       de se familiariser avec une approche qualitative et interprétative des résultats de la recherche

Evaluation session 1 : une épreuve écrite de 2h a written exam lasting 2 hours

Tout recours à l’usage d’une IA générative constaté durant le semestre dans la réalisation des travaux de contrôle continu soumis à évaluation fera l’objet d’un rapport disciplinaire.
