Culture visuelle (EAD)

This course is designed to familiarize students with some of the key developments in the history of British art from the sixteenth to the mid-nineteenth century, through the works of major artists working in Britain over the period. It aims to develop students’ capacity to analyse paintings, both in terms of their composition and aesthetic qualities, and in relation to the cultural and historical contexts in which they were created. Particular emphasis is placed on portraiture and on landscape.

Whether official, heroic, or intimate, portraits not only possessed a psychological dimension but helped fashion the public image of their sitters. They were also a means of establishing the artist’s own status, and they participated in the shaping of sensibility. After examining court portraiture of the Tudor and Stuart eras, the class explores the new ways in which eighteenth-century artists handled the portrayal of their contemporaries, through a discussion of the art of Hogarth, Reynolds, Gainsborough and other artists of the period. It then turns to the practice of landscape, which flourished as a major genre from the late eighteenth century onwards. Exploring the works of Wilson, Gainsborough, Constable, Turner, Girtin and others, the course surveys the practice of landscape as a privileged space for empirical observation, but also for idealisation and for Romantic explorations of subjectivity and national identity.
