Littérature: Shakespeare en contexte/ Shakespeare in Context

 Description : Initiation à la littérature de la période élisabéthaine et à l’œuvre de William Shakespeare.

L’analyse approfondie d’Othello permettra aux étudiants d’étudier la tragédie dramatique de la période élisabéthaine. Nous examinerons comment cette œuvre met en scène les thèmes de l’amour et de la jalousie, et comment elle se situe dans le contexte culturel et politique de la première modernité.

An introduction to the literature of the Elizabethan period and to the works of William Shakespeare.

The thorough study of the full text of Othello will allow students to explore the practice of the tragic genre during the Elizabethan era. We will examine how this tragedy stages the themes of love and jealousy and how it relates to the early modern cultural and political context.

S'aventurer hors du monde familier, de ses habitudes et certitudes, c'est l'une des vocations de la littérature, que ce soit dans des récits du voyage, de l'exil, de la migration et de l'expérience multiculturelle ; ou plus généralement, dans l'exploration de l'inconnu, et de la figure de l'étranger au sens le plus large du terme, qu'il vienne d'ailleurs ou qu'on le découvre logé en soi-même. On étudiera des romans de langue anglaise qui mettent en œuvre de tels déplacements et découvertes, compliquant nos appartenances et nourrissant ainsi notre propre aventure dans le monde.

Venturing outside the confines of the home and embracing the unsettling of habits and certainties which travelling involves is one of the things literature invites us to do, and more specifically works of fiction about travel, exile, migration, and the multicultural experience. More generally, literature often explores the unknown, and the figure of the stranger, whether encountered in others or discovered within the self. We shall study novels staging such trajectories and discoveries, thus complicating our sense of identity and belonging, and enriching our own adventure in the world.

The primary objective of this course is to introduce third-year students to the Golden Age of English literature in its historical and cultural context. We will study excerpts from various works of the Elizabethan period in order to provide students with a general understanding of the socio-historical issues of the period and its cultural developments. 

The second objective, related to the first, is to familiarize students with the specific features of 16th- and 17th-century English through the reading of annotated texts. Students will also learn to adapt their textual analysis techniques to the rhetoric and formats of early modern texts.

Throughout the semester, we will work on the methodology of the textual commentary (commentaire composé) and of the essay (dissertation).
