The Rise of the Novel in 18th-century Britain

The course aims to explore the “rise” of the novel in early 18^th-century Britain, as the development of the book market and of a new class of writers and readers (increasingly middle-class and female) favoured the birth of a new literary genre. The course will examine the emergence of this “novel” genre, ostensibly breaking away from earlier romances to present life-like “histories” of ordinary characters in ordinary circumstances. It will do so through a selection of extracts (from Aphra Behn to Henry Fielding, via Daniel Defoe) and the study of one of the key works in this new genre, Samuel Richardson’s Pamela; or Virtue Rewarded (1740) – the story of a young servant’s determined resistance to her master’s advances, which proved an immediate hit and sparked a notorious controversy.

This course explores the development of gothic fiction in the English-speaking world from the late eighteenth century to the present. It aims to trace the origins, evolution and enduring relevance of this genre across historical periods. Particular emphasis will be placed on the relationship between gothic fiction and femininity. Initially shaped by women writers (such as Ann Radcliffe and Mary Shelley) and largely directed at a female readership, gothic texts provide a rich framework to examine the representation of female characters in literature. The syllabus includes the study of one complete gothic novella, Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, alongside the analysis of a selection of extracts from both British and American gothic novels and stories, from the late-eighteenth to the twentieth century. Priority will be given to close textual analysis.

The course seeks to familiarize students with this foundational moment in the history of literary realism and with its material context, to introduce them to theories of the novel, and to train them in the study of texts of various lengths for the purposes of commentary and essay writing.
