The UK in the 19th century (1800-1902)

This course offers an overview of the United Kingdom in the nineteenth-century, from the Act of Union (1800) to the end of the Boer War in 1902, focusing on the major political, social, economic, and cultural changes that shaped the UK in the age of industrialisation and empire. It examines how the country became the world’s leading industrial power and a dominant imperial force, while also facing the challenges of urban growth, social reform, and internal tensions. It will explore how industrialisation, urbanisation, and technological change reshaped everyday life, and how class relations were affected by an evergrowing gap between the wealth of the upper classes and the widespread poverty of the working classes, mass poverty being one of the main features of the Victorian era.

The course begins by briefly situating Britain in the broader context of the late eighteenth‑century Atlantic and European world, before examining the effects of the Industrial Revolution and the rise of factory production, wage labour, and new forms of commercial and financial organisation. It then investigates the social consequences of industrial growth, including the expansion of cities, the growth of slums, the spread of new diseases, and the gradual emergence of public health and housing reform movements. Students will also study the development of working‑class culture, trade unions, and early socialist and radical political movements. A major section of the course focuses on political change, the reform of Parliament, the extension of the franchise, the evolution of party politics, the rise of a bureaucratic state, and debates over citizenship and representation. Gender and family life are also treated as central themes, with attention to the “separate spheres” ideology, child labour, women’s work and the growing women’s movement. Imperial and international dimensions will be integrated throughout: Britain’s acquisition of colonies, the role of empire in the domestic economy and culture, and the ways in which imperial expansion intersected with racial and civilisational discourses, especially from the 1870s onwards. The course analyses how ideas of progress, modernity, and British “greatness” could, paradoxically enough, stand in sharp contrast to the everyday reality of people in the United Kingdom and the British Empire, whether it be in England, in Ireland or in the crown colonies or the dominions. It will also discuss critiques of the empire that emerged at home and abroad.

-Urbanisation, public health, and living and working conditions.

-The New Poor Law (1834)

-Political developments and reform: from Peterloo to chartism, socialism, trade unionism, voting rights, and party politics.

-Social history: class, gender, labour, education, and welfare.

-The Irish famine as a symbol of systemic colonial exploitation

-The British Empire and Britain’s global influence.

As far as methodology is concerned, this class will enable the participants to improve their writing and communication skills. Students will learn how to analyse primary sources. They will also improve their capacity to frame an argument and to write a commentary drawing on specific historical knowledge.

Ce cours poursuit l’étude de l’histoire des États-Unis engagée au semestre précédent et s’intéresse au développement de la jeune nation étatsunienne entre 1787 et 1865, depuis la rédaction et la ratification de la Constitution fédérale jusqu’à la guerre de Sécession. Il retrace les grandes étapes de la construction politique, territoriale et institutionnelle des États-Unis au cours d’une période fondatrice, marquée par l’essor de dynamiques de démocratisation, par l’émergence de mouvements de réforme mais aussi par l’intensification de profondes divisions internes. Une attention particulière sera portée aux contradictions qui traversent la jeune République autour de l’esclavage, de l’expansion vers l’Ouest et des intérêts divergents entre Nord et Sud. Il aborde également les effets de l’expansion territoriale sur les populations amérindiennes et les logiques d’exclusion qui accompagnent la formation de la nation. À travers l’étude de figures majeures, de textes fondateurs et d’événements charnières cet enseignement met en lumière les dynamiques, souvent conflictuelles, qui structurent les États-Unis durant cette période.

This course builds on the study of U.S. history introduced in the previous semester and examines the development of the young American nation from 1787 to 1865, from the drafting and ratification of the federal Constitution to the Civil War. It traces the major stages in the political, territorial and institutional formation of the United States during this foundational period, marked both by the expansion of democratic practices and the emergence of reform movements, as well as by the intensification of deep internal tensions. Particular attention will be paid to the contradictions that shaped the early Republic, especially those surrounding slavery, westward expansion and the diverging interests of the North and the South. The course also considers the impact of territorial expansion on Native American populations and the logics of exclusion that accompanied the making of the nation. Through the study of key figures, foundational texts and pivotal events, the course sheds light on the often conflictual dynamics that structured the United States during the period.

Approfondir la méthodologie du commentaire de texte historique ;

Développer une réflexion critique et une argumentation structurée en anglais à l’oral et à l’écrit.

Un devoir sur table de 2 heures à mi-semestre (commentaire de texte ou dissertation) 50% + un devoir sur table de 2 heures en fin de semestre (commentaire de texte ou dissertation) 50%. La note finale pourra être pondérée par la participation orale tout au long du semestre (préparation de textes, prise de parole, exposé etc...)

Remarque: La moyenne finale est établie sur la base des notes des TD des deux parties (britannique et américaine) de l'E.C.

Session 1: Continuous assessment. A 2-hour written exam at the mid-term (historical commentary on a primary source or essay) = 50% + a 2-hour written exam at the end of the term (historical commentary on a primary source or essay) = 50%.

The final mark may be weighted by oral participation throughout the term (preparation of oral commentaries on primary sources, taking an active part in class, presentations, etc.)
