Fragmented narratives in 18th century British literature

Many significant literary texts of the period feel incomplete, interrupted, unfinished or fragmentary: scraps of texts, texts with holes, episodes, digressions, missing chapters, disruptions in the page layout, lost manuscript, etc.

This course explores various instances of fragmented narratives (including visual narratives such as William Hogarth’s series of paintings and prints). We will analyse the way authors rely on fragmentation to illustrate the instability of human reason and perception and the unreliability of both narrators and readers.

The aim of this course is to analyse the formal techniques used to disrupt linear narratives, and to study the relation between books as material objects and the narratives they contain in the broader context of eighteenth-century print culture.
