Teaching french in english-speaking contexts

This course aims to prepare students to teach French as a foreign language in English-speaking contexts. It will focus on education systems and language teaching issues in the UK, with brief coverage of Canada and the United States. Students will study the history and evolution of language teaching, the language teaching crisis, teacher shortages, and innovative solutions to these problems.

They will also examine learners’; motivations, the challenges they encounter when learning French, and the impact of multilingualism and intercultural dimensions on language learning and teaching.

The course aims to familiarise students with the broader context of their future careers as French teachers in the UK and other English-speaking countries. Students will learn about the different educational contexts in English- speaking countries, and the evolutions that have led to language teacher shortages in the UK and Canada.

They will understand differences between assessment systems in various countries regarding language learning, and also regarding teachers’ standards. They will reflect on the motivations of young learners who study French in school and the main challenges they face. They will reflect on their own motivations as trainee teachers in specific contexts.
