Titre: Apartheid. Empire. Israel. Histories of a South African idea

This course traces the history of how South African communists thought of the connections between their struggles against apartheid and the cause of Israel/Palestine. In doing this, we might think more widely about the geopolitical order and changing ideas of anti-imperialism. We focus on successive generations of Jewish activists who – having fled antisemitism inside collapsing central European empires and migrated to South Africa (est. 1910), a settler colonial state forged in the crucible of new imperialism – played a key role in the South African Communist Party (est. 1921). Closely studying texts these activists wrote, we trace the evolution of their ideas across a century. Part I focuses on rising fascism in the 1930s (apartheid leaders had Nazi links) and the 1940s clash of European empires, which shaped anti-imperial solidarities. Thus, planning insurgency against apartheid in the 1950s, South African communists drew eclectic lessons from Zionists’ successful terrorist campaigns against British colonialism in Palestine. Part 2 considers the geopolitical shifts of the late 1960s (the Six Day War, Prague Spring etc.) that led to the rise of an anti-apartheid new left committed to Third World Revolution in alliance with Arab partners. Part 3 focuses on the post-Cold War moment when anti-apartheid activists, acclaimed for leading South Africa’s peaceful negotiated transition to democracy, travelled to the Middle East to militate for universal human rights inside Israel and Palestine and to support the Oslo Accords. ('We know too well that our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians' – Nelson Mandela, 1997.) Today, in an emerging multipolar world, the post-apartheid government denounces settler-colonialism in Palestine, as part of a wider anti-imperial strategy that sees South Africa host joint naval exercises with Russia and Iran.

-       Ce cours vise à développer la pensée critique des étudiant.e.s en examinant les origines, l'évolution des significations et les enjeux politiques complexes de l'impérialisme et de l'anti-impérialisme dans « le Tiers-Monde ».

-       Les présentations et les discussions en classe encouragent les étudiant.e.s à synthétiser des sujets complexes et à confronter un large éventail de points de vue.

-       Les étudiant.e.s apprendront à utiliser et à analyser les sources primaires.

Formule standard session 1 : contrôle continu.

-       Un devoir sur table de 2 heures à mi-semestre (commentaire de texte ou dissertation) 50% + un devoir sur table de 2 heures en fin de semestre (commentaire de texte ou dissertation) 50%.

-       La note finale sera pondérée par la participation orale tout au long du semestre (préparation de textes, prise de parole, exposé etc.)

Session 2 :

-       1 devoir écrit de 2h (commentaire de texte ou dissertation)

Session 1: Continuous assessment

-       One 2-hour in-class assignment at mid-semester (text commentary or essay) 50% + one 2-hour in-class assignment at the end of the semester (text commentary or essay) 50%.

-       The final grade will be weighted by oral participation throughout the semester (preparation of texts, public speaking, presentations, etc.).

Alternative assessment formula, Session 1:
