Titre : « The Whole Picture: British Art Today »

 In a context in which the toppling of statues erected in celebration of slave-traders in Bristol and London in the wake of the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests stirred debates surrounding the issue of a contested national heritage, this course explores how British artists have responded to the nation’s renewed interrogation of its historical experience of hegemony. It does so by interrogating how the Empire, the Industrial Revolution, and idiosyncratic attitudes to class and gender have shaped some specifically British artistic approaches. We will therefore look into feminist rereadings of art and artefacts, into the role cultural studies have played in encouraging artistic practices that encompass post-colonial and working-class modes of attention, and into new green readings of the landscapes of the birthplace of the Anglocene.

Objectifs en termes de connaissances : il s’agira d’acquérir une perception critique, contextualisée et historiographique des représentations iconographiques de l’Histoire brtiannique, ainsi que de comprendre les enjeux de l’extension du domaine de l’art au-delà de ses territoires traditionnels, ainsi que les processus de légitimation culturelle

Objectifs en termes de compétences : on développera des capacités rédactionnelles ainsi que des compétences pratiques de lecture et d’analyse d’œuvres artistiques

●        Formule dérogatoire session 1 :

- Écrit de 2h

●        Session 2 :

- Ecrit de 2h

-          Continuous assessment: one oral test (50%) and one two-hour written exam (50%)

-          Exceptional examination: one two-hour written exam

-          Session 2: one two-hour written exan
