Titre : Word and Image

This seminar aims to introduce students to the field of intermedial studies and, more specifically, to the comparative analysis of literary texts and visual documents of various kinds (paintings, engravings, comic books, graphic novels, etc.). The main field of exploration will be British literature and arts, from the eighteenth to the twenty-first century, with a specific focus on nineteenth-century art and literature. For example, we will look at the relationship between the engraved work and the poetic work of William Blake, the links between painting and literature within the Pre-Raphaelite movement, or the “revision” of the Victorian literary canon in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries in illustrated books and/or comics and graphic novels (Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre as reinterpreted by visual artist Paula Rego, the different illustrated versions of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland or of Oscar Wilde’s Salomé and The Picture of Dorian Gray, etc.). Some incursions into twenty-first century graphic narratives, such as Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home (2006), will also allow us to examine how contemporary visual storytelling revisits literary, autobiographical, and cultural traditions through innovative intermedial forms.

1 épreuve écrite de 3 heures (commentaire de texte ou dissertation)

Session 2 : épreuve écrite de 3 heures (commentaire de texte ou dissertation)

Continuous assessment:

1 two-hour midterm exam: written test (commentary or essay)
