Titre : Syntax

Why is it important to use grammatical labels for different kinds of words? How do we decide whether something is an adverb or a preposition? What should we do when a word does not readily fit existing categories? 

We put everything in categories on the daily; in grammar, words are no exception. Categorizing is a fundamental process in syntax, and linguists agree that there are different word classes, clause types, or functions. However, there are strong disagreements on the exact boundaries of those categories, or even on their names.

In this course, students will reflect on the various labels used in English grammar. They will learn about alternative classifications to traditional grammar, which is generally taught at the high school and university levels. They will come up with their own criteria to classify words and they will be asked to find solutions when presented with borderline cases. They will learn to verify their intuitions with the help of large electronic corpora (BYU or SketchEngine), to use spreadsheets to organize their data, and to interpret results from statistical analyses.

By the end of the semester, students will:

●       know how English words are categorized by various authors, and why there is so much diversity among frameworks;

●       formulate a research question, and gather and organize linguistic data using existing corpora;

●       be able to interpret results from statistical analyses, to write a small original discussing those results and to respect ethical research rules.
