Séminaire de linguistique

This course deals with aspects of prosody. It aims to present issues of interpretation of prosodic elements such as rhythm, word stress, sentence accent, intonation, pauses, etc. How does prosody reflect the structure of language (phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics)? What is its role in conversation?  What are the forms (phonetics) and functions (phonology) of prosody? What are the similarities, differences and interferences between English and French prosody? 

In addition to the theoretical aspect described above, this course will shed light on the methodological and epistemological levels. Advanced methods of annotation of oral corpora will be presented following the introduction proposed in Corpus Phonology.

●        Discover the different forms and functions of prosody.

●        Address the prosodic differences between English and French.

●        Know how to manipulate and analyze the prosody of an oral corpus.

●        Discover and use annotation systems for oral corpora.

●        Continuous assessment. The final grade is the average of an in-class 30-minute oral presentation (50%) and a 2-hour written and oral exam (analysis of prosodic markers from a sound file, 50%).
